No one needs to be persuaded how important safety is. Every young person should be equipped with the knowledge on the principles regarding road safety and first aid. For a number years the “Safety Olympics” has been an effective tool of road safety promotion. The first edition of the Olympics was held in 2007; then it was held under the banner of “Road Safety Olympics – A Class Safety”.

The first edition was a success with respect to the event organisation as well as the contents: the contestants presented exceptionally advanced level of knowledge and expertise and they radiated with enthusiasm. The consecutive edition held from 2008 to 2010 only confirmed the organisers’ conviction that the idea of safety promoting Olympics had been enthusiastically accepted and the consecutive editions of the event will become a glorious tradition of the region. The fifth edition of the Olympics will be accompanied by traffic rescue presentations and first aid demonstrations. This year’s Olympics will be the presentation forum for fourteen teams composed of three members; all contestants come from Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship; these are the best teams selected in voivodeship qualifying round. The teams will be encouraged by their twenty-member support teams. The podium places are reserved for the best three teams, they will also be presented with valuable prizes. In addition to the main contest there will also be a competition for the most creative support teams who will be given special prizes, all the competition participants will be presented with souvenirs.

According to the organisers’ assessment there will be about 320 participants; the 6th grade pupils of primary school from all Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship; they will compete in a whole series of road safety associated contests. One of the final rounds has been prepared by Voivodeship Commandment of the State Fire Brigade. In the course of the event the participants will have the chance to take the exam for the bicycle and moped driving licence; the examination will be held in a specially designed traffic range. They will also have the chance to have a closer look at the police, military vehicles and fire engines presented in the Targi Kielce exhibition hall. The exhibition pavilion will also be the presentation place for local and international institutions which work in aid of road safety, and these are KRUS, Customs Office, and the KH-Kipper company which takes part in the event for the first time.

The breaks between rounds will feature fashions shows of reflective garments and performances of young people representing municipal and voivodeship culture centres. Every year the Olympics generates enormous interest and enthusiasm among young participants. The idea of road safety promotion is important; recently it has also become fashionable and widely accepted by the general public. This is much more than the active tool for road safety promotion; it is also a great aid for pedagogues and teachers as well school children’s parents in their everyday work.
