Korean Defence Industry Puts the Best Foot Forward at 2024 MSPO
Innovative solutions are presented by the most famous companies in the Korean defence sector. Key participants:
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) presents its advanced FA-50, KF-21 and LAH aircraft at stand G-34. Integral to the Republic of Korea Air Force, modern aircraft demonstrate multi-role mission capabilities and next-generation fighter technology.
Hanwha Aerospace with its subsidiaries - Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Systems, use the expo stand G-37 a sthe showcase to present their latest solutions in aviation, marine and space systems. Hanwha Ocean presents the advanced KSS-III submarine, equipped with an air-independent propulsion system and advanced combat and sonar systems.
Hyundai Rotem, (Expo stands G-38 and ZF-12) shows the K2 Black Panther tank, considered one of the most modern main battle tanks in the world, and a number of armoured and tactical vehicles.
Polish-Korean cooperation
The presence of Korean companies at MSPO 2024 highlights the intensifiied cooperation between Poland and South Korea in defence sector. This cooperation includes both technology transfer and joint research and development projects and has recently been evidenced by agreement between Poland and South Korea regarding the modernisation of the Polish armed forces and the purchase of advanced defence systems from Korean manufacturers.
Korean defence companies such as Poongsan, specialising in the production of ammunition, and SNT Dynamics, providing advanced automatic transmission and mortar systems, also mark their presence at the trade fair, presenting innovative solutions tailored to the needs of the modern battlefield.
The Korean defence industry is one of the country's fastest-growing sectors which has gained international recognition for its advanced technologies and competitive products.
Growth and profits
South Korea is one of the world's largest arms exporters; in 2022, the country reported a record-breaking level of arms exports i.e. approximately $17 billion. This puts South Korea among the top global exporters, behind the United States, Russia, France and Germany; Korean defence companies sell their products to many countries, including Poland, Australia, India, Norway and the United Arab Emirates. Koreak has signed agreements with Warsaw to supply K2 tanks and K9 howitzers, which have contributed to a significant increase in exports in recent years.
Korean companies such as Hanwha Defense, Hyundai Rotem and Korea Aerospace Industries keep investing in the new technologies and weapons systems development to remain competitive internationally. The government also supports the development of the defence industry, offering tax breaks and subsidies for research and development and promoting international cooperation. The Ministry of Defence and the Defence Development Agency play a key role in planning and coordinating defence projects.
MSPO 2024 is, therefore, an excellent opportunity to strengthen business and technological relations between Poland and South Korea, contributing to the strengthening of both countries' defense capabilities.
