Description
The Tejo region is located in the heart of Portugal, near the country's capital, Lisbon. Tejo is known for its vineyards, olive groves, cork forests and the famous Lusitan horses. It is one of the oldest regions in Portugal with a wine-growing tradition dating back to the 12th century. Vineyards have graced the banks of the Tagus River (Tejo in Portuguese) since Roman times, and the influence of the centuries-old grape-growing tradition is still evident in the architectural relics that are an indispensable part of the country. The most popular grape varieties in Tejo are: Fernão Pires and Arinto (white grape varieties) and Touriga Nacional and Castelão (red grape varieties).
