Description
The Świętokrzyskie Voivodship covers the area of 11,710.50 square kilometres (which is equivalent to one fourth of the Netherlands’ area or over half of Slovenia’s). Its population size is 1,182,200 people (i.e. approximately one fourth population in Slovakia or two thirds in Slovenia). The Voivodeship is composed of 102 municipalities (gminas) and 14 districts (poviats). The capital of the region is Kielce – the city with population of 181,763 people.
The Świętokrzyskie Mountains, one of the oldest in Europe and covered with rock debris, are one of the greatest attractions in Poland. For tourists, the Świętokrzyskie region is also rich in forests of the Jodłowa Primeval Forest, the landscape of Ponidzie, monuments in Sandomierz, clear waters, unique caves and rock groups, over 1,300 km of hikers and about 1,500 km of bicycle tourist routes.
The Świętokrzyskie region has got an industrial and agricultural character. The division into the industrial north of the region and the agricultural south and east is very clear. In the Sandomierz and Opatów area, a significant gardening and fruit-growing centre has been developed. Highly efficient agriculture has been also developing in the area of Kazimierza Wielka, Pińczów and Jędrzejów. Most of the urban centres with a large number of jobs in industry are concentrated in the area of the former Old Polish Industrial District. The district began its development in the fifteenth century. Lead, silver and copper mining and metallurgy developed here.
The agri-food processing sector is constantly developing in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. It should be added that until the nineteenth century the district was the country's main centre of iron production. The most important industrial and urban centres are: Kielce, Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Starachowice, Skarżysko-Kamienna and Sandomierz, Staszów and Końskie. Kielce plays the role of an administrative, cultural and economic centre of the region.
